Recently I was having a discussion about a ministry opportunity I feel called to participate in. It is an area that our Church is lacking and as we talked I commented that I had been interested in this for several years and that I had been seriously looking at materials, talking it up, having specific people pray about it and was trying to determine if I was the person who was supposed to start this ministry. The person I was talking to commented that if it had been on my heart that long, I was probably supposed to do it. He further commented that God often takes us out of our comfort zones when he calls us to something and that it looks like that was what he was doing in my life. I thought hmmmm.
Then yesterday I was having a discussion with a co-worker about doing God’s will or specific things God had told me/her/us to do. Her comment was I have been praying recently that “God would not send me to Africa,” that she was comfortable where she was, with her friends, her home, etc. This made me ask her, “What is your Africa?” What has God called you to do that you don’t want to do or where is it that you are afraid God will send you?
That made me think of the story about the boy praying “Lord I’ll do whatever you want, but please don’t send me to Africa.” Found a poem based on this-this is the last stanza.
Just don’t send me to Africa Lord…

Oh Lord?... why don’t You ever use me?
...You know I would do anything for You
…Just don’t change me Lord…
How like us. We beg God to use us, but we put restrictions on what he can do. Then we fuss that he hasn’t used us. We beg him not to send us to Africa, we beg him not to make us get out of our comfort zone. But if we are comfortable doing something, we probably don’t need to rely on God to make it happen. If we don’t need to rely on God, then who is going to get the glory? If it’s not God then why should he bless it? So as much as most of us hate it our “Africa” is not going to be within our comfort zone, it’s going to be within Gods.
So the real question is “What is your Africa?” What is it God is calling you to do that is outside your comfort zone? What does he want you to do? Where does he want you to go? Are you willing to be obedient to God’s calling?
See you in Africa!

I have just finished reading ALL your posts on your blog and they are every one very thought provoking spiritually. You have brought out some really good points.
Keep up the good work.
God bless you....

Just give me a map, and I'll show you all my "Africas". God has pushed me of late to leave some very familiar territory in regards to one of my children. It's requiring a difficult embrace, but I know it's the right and good thing to do. Thank you for the beautiful portrait of moving within the rhythm of God's will.
Roxie, I'm so glad you visited my blog. May God bless you in your many ministries, not the least of which is seeing your teenagers to adulthood and beyond. What a daunting and privileged calling, especially as a single mom. Been there, friend. You have my prayers...

Roxie, thanks for visiting my blog. I'm glad I'm not sitting alone in the "waiting room".
Loved this post on "Africa". It reminds me of the book study I'm leading right now by John Ortberg - "If you want to walk on water, you've got to get out of the boat". Following God involves leaving our 'boat' and heading to 'Africa'.
I'm in the middle of such a journey currently. From fear to faith. My 'Africa' right now is North Carolina - not because I'm afraid of the State :o), but because I have a fear of flying. God has called me to attend a conference there next month - to step out of my comfort zone - and follow Him. So, I have said 'yes' to God - and I will be boarding a plane and trusting Him.
I really don't want to miss anything God has planned for me!
Flying with Him,
Joy
Roxie -
Thanks for visiting my blog. I love your "Africa" post. Very thought provoking.
By your profile I see you are a law judge, and I am a stay-home mom so that may be why I have more time to write than you! I wish I could do more, but 3 days a week seems to suit me fine for now.
Hang in there. God's timing is not ours.
Hi Roxie. Nice to meet you. Sometimes the world is my Africa and I feel much more contented to stay home. Other times my home life is my Africa and I want to be anywhere but here. What a thought provoking question!!
I have 2 boys also. 12 & 17. They too are musically talented and the oldest has been in a few different bands. I agree with you, when they're playing, that's my favorite music.
Thanks for visiting my blog.

Great post on Africa! I think we all share that fear: that God will call us to some remote jungle. But really our Africa could be to witness to the moms at the bus stop or to foster a child or volunteer in a homeless shelter.
I know leading a Bible study and starting to write are two of the Africas I've visited recently.
Blessings and prayers as you listen for God's still small voice.
Kelli
Hi Roxie,
Thanks so much for the sweet prayer you left on my blog!
I read your profile and my husband is from Louisiana. He is from Monroe. He has family down in the Lake Charles area. I don't know if you can get news from that area but his cousin is a TV News anchor there by the name of John Bridges.
I also loved your post. We are walking into our own Africa by becomming Interim Pastor for a new church start. We have been in Christian Vocational ministry before in the areas of Youth and children. Mike now works for Billy Graham. Going back to Africa in a new ministry is tough but we know that God is leading.
I will visit again soon
Thanks again for the prayers.
Pamela
